Ascertaining the number of people who have been to a website can be best described as an inexact science.

One of the most popular terminologies one will hear is the word "hits". But this may never be a true reflection of the number of people who have visited due to the definition of what a hit is. For example, if you have a page that has some text on it and ten graphics then when someone accesses that page they will be asking for 11 items - or hits - to be downloaded.

Additionally, cache systems will also have an effect on the count. To find out more about the complexities of counting visitors go to The Marketing Manager's Plain English Internet Glossary web page.

For the record, this website uses cgi scripts to count the number of visitors to pages contained within this site.
